Root filling material contains no mercury. This is a confusion between amalgam and root filling material usually caused by the term ‘filling’. It’s not exactly the same.
The most common material used is gutta-percha. Gutta-percha is 70% zinc oxide and 30% tabum gum, which is the resin from the tabum tree. Other materials exist like resins; however, they are pretty new to the scene. Gutta-percha works.
It has forty years plus of history behind it, and studies have been done extensively over the years and over the world to show that it works. I have used gutta-percha in almost every circumstance, and until these new materials prove themselves in the way gutta-percha has proved itself, I’m sticking with gutta-percha.
