Zirconia Dental Implants

the holy grail of holistic dental care is to provide dentistry which takes into account the interactions of the dental materials inserted, with the rest of the body.

 • Comfort whilst eating with a strong bite
 • Kind to surrounding tissue
 • Metal-free implants that are bioinert

Why are People Choosing Zirconia Dental Implants?
With an increased life expectancy and higher expectations of quality of life, the majority of people are unwilling to accept removable dentures to replace missing teeth.
With dental implants becoming increasingly popular, many people are becoming concerned about the health risks that are associated with aluminium, nickel and many other metals used in these alloys. There have been reported incidences of allergic reactions to many metals, and more recently to titanium (though this is still rare). A predictable way to accurately test for these allergies is to undertake a MELISA test.

It has been hypothesised that the reason for this increase in metal allergies may be linked to repeated contact with numerous metal materials that we subject our bodies to.

For instance, titanium dioxide is a ubiquitous material found in toothpaste, in cosmetics, medications, and used as a flavour enhancer in dairy products to enhance the white colour! It has also been suggested that different metals when put together can setup a battery like effect. This may disrupt or alter sensitive rhythms in the body.

Because of this, people are constantly striving for metal free dental solutions that won’t cause interference with their body – which is where zirconia dental implants come in.

What are the benefits?

These have been used since the 1980’s, but with dubious results. However, in the last decade and with the availability of cutting edge technologies, techniques and materials, these are much more refined and predictable.

Zirconia metal free implants are biologically inert, and so pose no risk of interaction or allergies to the human body.

Classified as a ceramic, zirconia is a poor electrical conductor, which means it can withstand drastic changes in temperature. Zirconia is also stronger than titanium and corrosion resistant – adding to the durability of this type of dental implant.

An inherent characteristic of the zirconia is its white appearance, allowing it to mimic the translucent properties of a tooth, and serves as a natural complement to surrounding healthy teeth – which makes it a fine choice for natural looking dentistry.

How do I know if I have a titanium allergy?

If you notice a health problem that has started after you had a titanium implant fitted, then there is a chance that you suffer from a titanium allergy. To check for the allergy you’ll need to take a MELISA test. It is possible to check if you’re allergic before you receive a titanium implant, but you will need to know exactly what the composition of the implant is. With other metals like aluminium and vanadium being added to help improve the titanium’s properties, an allergy to those metals can also be tested for.

Will zirconia implants be more aesthetically pleasing?

If you suffer from gum recession or thin gums you might find that zirconia dental implants are more aesthetically suited to you. Titanium dental implants have been known to make gums appear grey, while zirconia implants are white and therefore manage to look more natural.

How durable are zirconia dental implants?

Zirconia implants are known for being particularly durable, as they were specifically designed to be able to withstand a lot of force. When looking for a reliable dental implant system, strength and durability are attractive features.

Barry Dunford, Perthshire (2015)

I was looking for a holistic dentist who could offer a metal free implant, i.e. a zirconium implant. As a result of Neeraj Puri using laser technology during the treatment I found that there was almost no swelling and very little pain immediately after the dental surgery. After having had dental work over a number of years with other dentists, I can honestly say that Neeraj’s advice and technical ability is second to none. As a result, I now have a metal free zirconium implant which is functioning perfectly and has fully integrated into my jaw just like a natural tooth.
