How does it work?
The Brite Smile teeth whitening system uses an LED lamp. It works in the blue region of the spectrum and does not contain harmful ultraviolet light. This system, using the plasma light technology along with a whitening gel, has created a revolutionary method of whitening which quickly, safely and effectively whitens the entire smile at once.
The primary ingredient in the recommended gel is hydrogen peroxide (less than 15% – much lower than other in-surgery whitening gels that often contain 35%-50% hydrogen peroxide), which has been safely used in teeth whitening for over 100 years and is recognised as an effective ingredient by the dental community.
The innovative light system activates the hydrogen peroxide in the gel and speeds up the whitening procedure so you leave in just over an hour with your teeth at the optimal natural whiteness, satisfaction guaranteed. The process whitens the teeth an average of 9 shades whereas most other procedures offer as few as a 3-5 shade change. The results last for about three years.
Is it safe?
Yes. Unlike the “do-it yourself” take home bleaching systems, our dentists oversee every aspect of your BriteSmile procedure which will be carried out by our experienced dental hygienist. Our dentists will conduct a thorough examination to ensure both teeth and tissue are acceptable. Your BriteSmile procedure will not soften enamel or damage existing composites or fillings.
Will it hurt?
The BriteSmile teeth whitening process is normally painless. A very small percentage of people may experience a minor, dull “ache” following the procedure. Taking some form of analgesic almost always resolves the feeling and most discomfort goes away after 12-24 hours. It is best to avoid very hot or very cold drinks for the first 24 hours if there is any tooth sensitivity.
What are the advantages of the BriteSmile system over the other methods available today?
The gel/tray systems generally require at least 1 hour per day, but more usually 4 or more hours per day for 2-8 weeks, and often produce less than 5 shades improvement. Many users of the tray system have stated that there is often significant pain or sensitivity during the whitening process, and that it must be endured for many hours.
Laser whitening can be a long (up to 3 hours) and painful process, which may achieve good results, but at a price, generally the cost is nearer to £1,000. The process uses a powerful laser system as well as a 35%-50% hydrogen peroxide gel. The teeth are often sensitive and some patients say they are unhappy with the outcome.
Will the procedure whiten existing crowns, veneers or “tooth coloured” fillings?
Teeth whitening only works on natural teeth. While the procedure may lighten severely stained crowns, veneers or tooth coloured fillings it usually does not lighten them enough to match the shade of newly whitened teeth. If you have crowns, veneers or composites and decide to have the procedure, the dentist will work to achieve the optimum results.
